Balancing Conservation with Economic Growth

What is forest plantations

About Forest Plantations in Malaysia

Malaysia is committed to reducing pressure on natural forests by developing large-scale forest plantations. These plantations ensure a sustainable timber supply while supporting the growth of the wood-processing industry.

The Forest Plantation Development Programme

The Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) initiated a study in 2003, leading to the establishment of the Forest Plantation Development Programme under the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities (KPK). The goal was to develop 130,000 hectares of forest plantations by 2020, planting 25,000 hectares annually over 15 years.

A Sustainable Future for Malaysia’s Timber Industry

Forest plantations ensure a continuous, eco-friendly timber supply, promoting economic growth while protecting natural forests for future generations.

Supporting Malaysia’s Wood-Based Industries

With forest plantations in full development, plantation-grown timber will significantly contribute to Malaysia’s wood-processing industry. Beneficiaries include:

Furniture manufacturers (indoor and outdoor).

Mills producing mouldings, doors, and flooring.

Downstream woodworking industries that rely on sustainable timber sources.
