“Bento and Onigiri” – Compact dining at its finest

Programme: TIMB3R Design Incubator Programme (DIP)

The TIMB3R Design Incubator Programme (DIP), touted as a first-of-its-kind incubation programme, is the brainchild of the Malaysian Timber Council (MTC), the Malaysian Furniture Council (MFC), and the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID). Its primary aim is to foster collaborations between manufacturers and designers, propelling the furniture and wood-based industry towards the creation of high-value-added Malaysian wood products for the international market.

A notable example of a successful partnership within this programme was between Ms. Siti Mawarni Embong and United Woodwork & Construction (M) Sdn Bhd. Together, they conceived ‘Bento and Onigiri,’ a space-efficient furniture ensemble. Bento refers to the dining table, while Onigiri represents the dining stool.

Taking inspiration from the design of a bento box, this creation combines fundamental shapes and forms to fashion a space-efficient dining table, replete with extra storage — a flawless solution for those dwelling in cramped living quarters. The size and compactness of this design won’t occupy too much space, making it an ideal choice, particularly for young adults and small families residing in small studios or apartment units.

The table features two internal compartments and three ‘onigiri’ stools. Unlike conventional dining sets with four seats, this product is thoughtfully scaled for three individuals. The stools have three legs, symbolising a delightful imperfection, yet maintaining balance.

The Bento and Onigiri set places a strong emphasis on function, comfort, and materials. Crafted predominantly from the Semangkok timber , it sets the tone, while the upholstery adopts a muted and neutral palette, expressing a minimalist texture.

Ms. Siti Mawarni, the designer of Bento and Onigiri, expressed her interest in participating in the programme, citing that it encourages her to explore new horizons. Additionally, she noted that the programme boasts a sensible timeline and offers designers the opportunity to oversee the product’s development and its performance in the real market.

Mr. Mah Kong Yeow, the Managing Director of United Woodwork & Construction (M) Sdn Bhd, said he knew about TIMB3R DIP through MFC and expressed keen interest in participating in the programme. He saw it as an opportunity to enhance the company’s brand value chain by creating innovative products. The programme offers international exposure and supports global commercialisation, while also serving as a platform to showcase their potential.

He further noted that United Woodwork was eager to collaborate with designer Ms. Siti Mawarni because her concept emphasised the versatility and allure of timber to achieve a minimalist aesthetic.

The manufacturing of Bento and Onigiri took approximately five months, with a strong focus on ensuring the furniture’s stability. They were meticulous in perfecting the connections between the frame and the legs.

In addition, they have begun to receive orders for this product, demonstrating the programme’s mutual benefits for both the designer and manufacturer. The company also has plans to sell it online.

Mr. Mah encourages timber manufacturers to join this programme, which offers opportunities for manufacturers to connect with numerous designers to develop new Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) products for both the export and local markets.

TIMB3R DIP remains an avenue for the industry to partner with emerging designers to conceptualise and craft wood-based furniture products. Some of the final products from TIMB3R DIP 3.0 were on display at the Reka Interiors Exhibition (RiX) 2023 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from 26 to 29 October 2023.
